PRACTICE AS A REMOTE OPTOMETRIST

Work from home for better work-life balance while increasing patient access to care

IMPROVE WORK-LIFE BALANCE WHILE INCREASING PATIENT ACCESS TO EYE CARE

As a proactive leader in the industry, EssilorLuxottica is always evaluating how new technologies can enhance both the patient and doctor experience. Remote optometry is expected to expand as the landscape of optometry continues to evolve. The technologies available today for optometrists, permitting a synchronous and comprehensive exam with full equipment, has the potential to increase patient access to eye care and help qualified doctors engage with patients remotely, while improving doctor work-life balance.

WHAT IS REMOTE CARE?

A remote exam is the same as a comprehensive eye exam experience, just in a remote fashion. The main difference is the patient is in the office and the doctor is remote (working from home).

HOW DOES REMOTE CARE WORK?

Our remote care is enabled by our innovative “Connect” platform, an integrated software platform that enables a high-quality, digitally connected, end-to-end patient experience. This platform enables a consistent comprehensive exam experience whether the doctor is in-person or remote. There is some variation in technology across locations, training and support provided.

  1. Highly qualified tech completes all of the pre-testing onsite.
  2. Doctor completes refraction & consultation remotely via digital screen in office.
  3. Patient receives an advanced, uncompromising patient experience at a convenient time for them.

Our remote-optometry solution is NOT just a method to update eyeglasses and contact lens prescriptions. It is NOT an online refraction solution only.

WHAT DOCTORS HAVE TO SAY

“You become a doctor to help people, fix their problems, ease their burdens and enable them to live their lives the best they can. To help your local community is great, but to remove geographic barriers and be able to help people where they are is amazing. The remote care instrumentation and testing is state-of-the-art and comprehensive. When you couple this with highly trained and caring techs, it’s eye care you feel proud to be a part of. The optometric technicians enjoy being an integral part of patient care in performing extensive pretesting and reassuring patients throughout the process. Patients feel the exam is better than they’ve experienced in-person. How I examine and treat patients is exactly the same as in person care. It’s a joy to be able to help more people in an exciting, technologically advanced way.”

“We use so much data in our practices, what we do now when we see our patients in person is walk into the exam room and turn our backs to our patients so we can see what’s on the computer. What a remote care exam does is it allows us to focus on the data while looking into our webcams, which makes the patient feel like we have a better connection. If you watch patients interact with a TV screen, they’re interacting so much because there’s a face looking back at them. So, even though they’re looking at a TV screen, it’s not our backs.”

"Many patients living in rural areas have to travel a great distance or wait many weeks/months in order to receive eyecare. The Connect platform serves as a great way of expanding accessibility to care for those patients living in remote areas.  Truly, our remote care exams experience is beneficial in any location, including cities since it allows offices to increase the number of available exam slots each day. In terms of the remote experience, patients frequently express that they feel as if I'm physically in the exam room with them while we are video conferencing and I am remotely controlling the equipment in real time. Thankfully with current technology we can successfully conduct a comprehensive eye exam, which patients have described as the most thorough exams they have ever had."

- Dr. Jessica Beaudoin

“Remote care exams enables a new standard of care by keeping patients better connected with providers like myself. With the EssilorLuxottica Connect platform, many patients living in remote areas are now able to receive quality eye-care exams more accessibly and effectively rather than waiting months for an appointment. With this innovative technology and real-time video conferencing, I am able to provide a data-driven diagnosis, which serves as a critical tool in determining whether my patients need additional care. Patients are amazed by this new technology and report that although I am not in the office, the care and outcome remain as effective.”
